Lincolnton woman drives car in Thurmond Lake

A Lincolnton, Ga., resident was involved in a single car accident when she drove her 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser off the Little River bridge into Lake Thurmond this morning.

Emily Hinson of Lincolnton was travelling eastbound on Georgia Highway 47 when her car left the road near the Lincoln County end of the bridge. Lincoln County Sheriff Gerald Lawson said Hinson managed to roll down a window and swim to shore after the accident.

She was transported to an area hospital. He said her injuries do not appear life-threatening.

Lawson said the investigation would be turned over to the Georgia State Highway Patrol, which would also be responsible for extricating the submerged car from the lake.

Cynthia Carrolle, a friend of Hinson’s, arrived on the scene shortly after Hinson escaped the car.

“She was just sitting there on the rail and there was a person with a hand on her shoulder,” she said. “About five cars had pulled over.”
