Tree splits in half, blocks westbound Greene Street in Olde Town Augusta

A large tree split in half during a windy Sunday afternoon, roughly around 3 p.m., blocking the westbound side of the 400 block of Greene Street in Olde Town Augusta.

When the tree split, it made a loud noise and some residents of a neighboring apartment building said the building shook and that it sounded like a car had struck the tree or even an earthquake. The piece of the tree that was knocked off fell across the street and in front of the apartment building.

The tree is in front of Bell & Brigham law office at 457 Greene St. No buildings sustained significant damage, no vehicles were hit and no injuries were reported.

As of 11 p.m., all lanes of Greene Street were open.
