Columbia County elections official still in hospital

Debbie Marshall

Columbia County Elections Director Deborah Marshall remains hospitalized since surgery April 9 for a brain tumor.

Marshall, 48, has not fully awakened since the surgery and withdrawal of a medically induced coma at the MCG Health Center, but each day has been gradually more responsive, said her husband, Lee Marshall. Doctors are awaiting further tests before recommending additional steps in battling remnants of the tumor, called a glioblastoma, Marshall said. Radiation treatment likely is next, he said.

Marshall, a Board of Elections staffer since 1984 and director of the office since 2000, was hospitalized April 6 after complaining of persistent, severe headaches.

“We’re just trusting in the Lord to bring us through this,” Marshall said.

The county’s Board of Elections recently met and the members don’t yet want to name an interim director, County Administrator Scott Johnson said.

Registration Coordinator Nancy Gay is “the go-to person” in the office, he said.
