Road name to honor teacher

The section of 15th Street between Laney Walker and Martin Luther King boulevards will be renamed Ruth B. Crawford Highway Saturday.

A dedication ceremony will take place in the Haygood Holsey Hall circle at Paine College off 15th Street at 11a.m. The renaming was spurred by a House resolution proposed by Rep. Wayne Howard in the Georgia General Assembly.

A 1939 graduate of Paine College, Crawford worked as a teacher with the Richmond County Board of Education for 38 years.

She retired in 1977 and founded the Shiloh Comprehensive Community Center, where she assisted the elderly, provided food and shelter for the needy and helped educate youth. She is also known for working with the court system to rehabilitate first-time offenders.

She continues to contribute financially to Paine while participating in various educational and civic organizations.
