Lady Antebellum trumps Richmond County high school graduations

Lady Antebellum did more than sell out its May 22 concert at James Brown Arena in five minutes earlier this month.

That concert also bumped a previously scheduled day of Richmond County high school graduations. The system’s high schools have used the arena for two days in late May the past several years for commencement ceremonies.

The district did not sign a contract with the Augusta-Richmond County Coliseum Authority to cement the dates May 21 and 22, even though they have long been announced on the system’s and schools’ Web sites and other publications.

“Lesson learned,” said Lynn Warr, the district’s executive director for high schools, at a school board meeting Tuesday. “We’ll sign the contract in July.”

Warr proposed changing the dates to May 20 and 21. But several board members objected, saying the dates should stay the same and the location should change. Augusta State University’s Christenberry Fieldhouse was given as a possible alternative.

The administration will come back to the board with a firm proposal in January.
