A judge on Friday denied bond for a 21-year-old man charged with fatally beating his roommate with a baseball bat, dismembering the body and burying it in the woods.
Altaye Levelle Knight was arrested May 22 after a woman picking wildflowers in a field off Williams Drive and Wilson Road in Hephzibah found the body of Damon Terrell Prymus, 27.
Assistant District Attorney John Markwalter said the two men were co-workers at the Applebee’s in Columbia County, where Prymus was recently “discharged” and was having difficulties in life.
Knight told authorities he and Prymus got into an altercation where Prymus beat him with a bat, Markwalter said. Knight, however, was able to overpower his roommate and beat him to death.
Knight admitted to authorities he let the body sit in the house for two to three days before going to Lowe’s to purchase an electric saw, contractor bags, a shovel and a mop.
Markwalter said Knight dismembered Prymus’ body and buried it in the field in Hephzibah, where he covered it with branches.
Knight, a graduate of Hephzibah High School who spent 15 months in the Air Force, will most likely argue self-defense, according to the public defender’s office.
