THOMSON — A detention officer at the McDuffie County jail was arrested and fired after he had inappropriate contact with a female inmate this year, authorities said. He was the second jailer to be accused of such activity in eight months.
Ron Cody, 30, of the 500 block of Pine Lane Drive, Thomson, was arrested Monday at the GBI office after warrants were issued for his arrest, according to Pat Morgan, the special agent in charge of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation regional office.
Cody was released the same day on $10,000 bond. He is charged with sexual assault of a person in custody and violation of oath of public office.
Morgan said the GBI was called on March 6 after Sheriff Logan Marshall learned of the incident, which supposedly took place in January. Marshall said Cody was fired Monday.
Cody is also a Thomson city firefighter, and Fire Chief Rick Sewell said he has been suspended pending further investigation.
In July, another McDuffie County jailer was charged with inappropriate behavior with a female inmate.
