Arrest made after former Laney football player, 19, shot to death

One man was killed and another seriously wounded by shots fired
during a party in Augusta late Thursday.

Shortly before midnight, police responded to a home in the 2500 block of East Kensington Drive in reference to a loud house party. When deputies arrived, people were running away and the officers later found Marquez Eubanks, 19, and Jeremy Whitehead, 21, with gunshot wounds to the torso.

Eubanks, of C Street, died at Georgia Regents Medical Center early Friday, according to Deputy Coroner Kenneth Boose.

Police said Whitehead, of Monte Carlo Drive, was in critical condition Friday.

Dijon Cortez Abbott, 17, of James Drive was arrested by investigators Friday night.

He faces charges of murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and two counts of aggravated assault.

Lucy C. Laney High School head football coach Lemuel Lackey said he was devastated by the loss of Eubanks, a former player.

Eubanks graduated in 2012 after four years as a starting lineman.

“He really was a good kid,” said Lackey, who was Eubank’s head coach and position coach. “This was a kid any coach would cherish to coach. I’m devastated. I really am.”
