Burke County grave robbers sought

Revolutionary, Confederate graves desecrated, police say

At least five graves in a historic cemetery outside Waynesboro, Ga., were found looted Saturday morning, and a $2,000 reward is being offered to find those who did it.

Sgt. Sean Cochran, of the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, said the desecration in the Old Church Cemetery on Idlewood Road possibly took place in recent weeks but was discovered when someone went to mow the grass. The cemetery is under the care of American Legion Post 120.

Cochran said the graves are very old, belonging to Revolutionary War and Confederate veterans.

“We found part of an old uniform on the ground,” he said.

An infant’s casket was also removed, he said.

Anyone with information may contact the Burke County Sheriff’s Office at (706) 554-2133.

The cemetery is under the care of American Legion Post 120. Donations to increase the reward will be accepted by the post. Post Commander Roy Bell has asked that anyone wanting to contribute contact him at (706) 564-6066.
