Suspect arrested in June 11 Evans shooting

Columbia County authorities have arrested a second suspect in the June 11 shooting of an Evans man.

Joquel Tre’Shon Downs, 17, of Augusta, is being held in the Richmond County Detention Center after his arrest this weekend in connection with the shooting of Julian Derrick Bell, Columbia County sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris said.

Robert Donnell Hobbs, 19, of Martinez, already is in custody in connection with the shooting that started with an argument over a basketball game at Wedgewood Park Apartments.

Bell told authorities he left the complex and drove to his house on Evans to Locks Road, where he said Hobbs and Downs approached him and Downs fired a handgun into his car, according to a police report.

Bell was hit twice in the left thigh and once in the abdomen. He was treated at Medical College of Georgia Hospital and is recovering, Morris said.

Downs and Hobbs are charged with armed robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and aggravated assault and are being held without bond, Morris said.
