Man killed in altercation with deputies in McDuffie County

One person is dead after he exchanged gunfire with an McDuffie County Sheriff’s Office deputy Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

He was identified as Roy Wayne Axon, 58, according to Warren County Coroner Paul Lowe, who assisted McDuffie County on the case.

Shortly after 4:30 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the 2100 block of Boneville Road, near Dearing, to respond to a domestic hostage situation, said Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent-in-Charge Mike Ayers.

When they arrived, several people were running from the residence, followed by a man with a gun. The man fired his weapon at police, who fired back, Ayers said. The man, identified as Axon,  was shot during the exchange and died shortly after, he said.

Ayers said the cause of death cannot be confirmed until an autopsy. No officer was seriously injured, he said. The names of the officers have not been released.

The GBI will head the investigation of the officer-involved shooting.
