Injured Barnwell policeman improving

The condition of a Barnwell policeman hospitalized with critical injuries early Saturday is improving, according to the City of Barnwell Police Department’s Facebook page.

Around 10 p.m. Saturday night, someone posted “Thank you all for your prayers and support for the injured Barnwell Police Officer and his family. His condition seems to be improving.”

Calls to Chief Todd Gantt went unreturned Sunday.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was patrolling around 1:30 a.m. when he saw a teen male walking down the wrong side of the highway. The officer pulled his car into the southbound lane and got out to talk to the youth, South Carolina State Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Brent Kelly said.

While they were talking an 84-year-old southbound motorist, identified as Sarah Wallace, crashed her vehicle into the police car. The cruiser then hit the officer and the teen, whose name was also not released. The officer was airlifted to Medical College of Georgia Hospital and the teen was taken by ambulance, Kelly said.

Wallace and her three passengers were taken to Barnwell County Hospital with minor injuries. The accident is under investigation and no charges have been filed as of Sunday night, Kelly said.
