Police: Man tried to steal from rent checks from Augusta apartment complex

Richmond County deputies are asking for help in their search for a man who tried to steal from an apartment complex drop box.

According to a sheriff’s office news release, a surveillance video shows a man lowering a rat trap into the drop box by a string around 4 a.m. Nov. 4 in an effort to get rental payments.

The rat trap broke off the string and was left behind, the release says.

The sheriff’s office did not identify the location of the incident shown in the surveillance video.

Similar incidents have occurred in the past several months across the Augusta area.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office at (706) 821-1020 or mlandam@augustaga.gov.
