Motorcyclist hurt in wreck with Augusta city vehicle

An officer with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office investigates the scene of an accident where a motorcyle and truck collided on Wheeless Road in Augusta.

A motorcyclist was injured after he was struck Monday afternoon by a city work truck.

The Georgia State Patrol said 53-year-old Joseph Brooks, a truck driver for Augusta’s Engineering Department, was trying to make a left turn onto Clinton Road from Wheeless Road and pulled out in front of motorcyclist Henry Britton.

Britton, 50, lost control and skidded 35 feet, striking the truck’s passenger door, Trooper 1st Class Amelio Lamkin said.

Britton was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital with a broken right leg, Lamkin said.

Brooks was hauling a trailer carrying a Bobcat. He has been a city truck driver since 2005, according to a database compiled by The Augusta Chronicle.

Lamkin said they found Brooks at fault in the accident, but he was not charged.
