Deputy injured in struggle with naked man

A Richmond County Sheriff’s deputy broke his ankle Sunday during an altercation with a naked Augusta man who was throwing himself against the glass windows of several Broad Street businesses.

Deputies Ronald Blanton and Nicholas Burdette first responded to the 600 block of Broad Street about 4:20 a.m. and found the man in a parking area with no shoes, one sock and “acting in a strange manner,” according to an incident report.

The deputies called an ambulance when the suspect said he was having chest pains and trouble breathing. While Blanton was gathering information, the suspect took off running west on Broad Street and stripped off all his clothes.

In the 800 block, the man threw himself against the plate glass windows but did not cause any damage, according to the report. The deputies tried to restrain the suspect, but he resisted and tried to “physically throw them to the ground.”

Blanton’s left ankle buckled and broke, according to the report. Gold Cross ambulance medics arrived at the scene and witnessed the altercation.

Blanton and the suspect were transported to University Hospital. The suspect will be charged with felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer.
