John Milledge Elementary School construction nears completion

A new John Milledge Elementary School will be open for pupils at the start of the school year in August.

It was originally scheduled for completion this month, but minor construction delays and some changes to flooring and room usage pushed the projected completion to June 26, said Wayne Johnston, the assistant director of construction for the Richmond County schools.

“When school resumes in early August, they’ll be in that building,” Johnston said.

After furniture is moved in the week after construction is completion, school administrators and teachers will be allowed to occupy the building, he said.

The building, funded by phase three of the special purpose local option sales tax, cost $10.2 million.

In the remaining weeks of construction, crews are working to lay flooring in the hallways and complete exterior site work, including curbing, paving and landscaping, Johnston said. The 49,000-square-foot, two-story brick building will house classroom space for about 650 pupils, a gymnasium, a kitchen and a cafeteria.

“Everything is under one roof,” he said.

The school is being built with a variable refrigerant flow heating system, which allows individual rooms to have controlled temperatures using a single condensing unit.

The temperatures can be changed from a remote location, which Johnston said will save on utility costs.

The school sits on the same property as the former school between Eve Street and Barnes Lane in the Harrisburg neighborhood. Students will be transferred from Lamar-Milledge Elementary.

Johnston said the school system has not determined the future use of Lamar-Milledge but said it could be used as a temporary site for Richmond County’s new magnet high school.

The Richmond County Career Technical Magnet School is under construction on Augusta Technical College’s campus but might not be complete by August.
