Evans senior Andrea Ziemba's selection for a national color guard will be recognized today.

Except when performing, Andrea Ziemba prefers to keep a low profile.

That might prove difficult today when the Evans High School senior is recognized for her inclusion in the color guard for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Though Andrea, 17, already knew of her inclusion, Army representatives will make it official during a ceremony at 10 a.m. at the school.

"A lot of my friends don't know, so it will be a surprise for them," said Andrea, a four-year member of Evans High's color guard and saxophonist for the concert band.

Each year, the All-American Bowl features the top 90 high school football players in the nation. They will play in the Alamodome in San Antonio on Jan. 8.

During the summer, Andrea competed with a color guard traveling squad and in contests across the country under the auspices of Drum Corps International.

Soon after, she put together an audition tape of her performances and sent it to the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band Selection Tour. Out of thousands of entries, 125 high school seniors are selected to participate in the marching band and color guard, which performs during the halftime show of the bowl game.

"They only let seniors in, so this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime honor," Andrea said.

She practices her flag routines three days each week, but stepped up her schedule to prepare for the All-American Bowl.

"They (the Army) sent me this pad that's like the one for (the Dance Dance Revolution video game), so I've been practicing my steps by seeing where I need to move on the computer," she said. "It's really cool."

She said she is shy but is unfazed by the attention and prospect of a national audience. "There's just something about being out there with the flag in front of all those people," she said. "It's an amazing feeling."
