Two former restaurant employees sentenced

Two former employees of a Martinez Mexican restaurant were sentenced Thursday in connection with receiving stolen electronics that were allegedly sold from the restaurant.

The men were two of seven charged in connection to burglaries in three counties and the sale of stolen electronics from Monterrey's at 4108 Washington Road.

Daniel Arroyo Lopez, 28, and Abel Martinez Martinez, 27, pleaded guilty to criminal attempt to commit theft by receiving stolen property at a sentencing hearing in Evans.

Superior Court Judge Michael Annis sentenced Lopez, of Springhouse Lane in Augusta, to the seven months he has spent in the Columbia County Detention Center since his February arrest. Because he is an illegal immigrant, Lopez will be transported to a U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement hearing in Atlanta, then deported back to Mexico.

Martinez, also in the country illegally, was sentenced to two years on probation and a $1,000 fine. He is currently working to become a naturalized citizen.
