Man charged in fatal shooting

A 28-year-old man has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old man in an apartment complex, authorities said Wednesday.

At about 8:35 p.m., police arrested Jermaine Demetrius Mitchell in the parking lot of the Bon Air Apartments, where he lived with his mother, Richmond County sheriff's Capt. Scott Peebles wrote in an e-mail Wednesday night.

Mitchell was charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and is being held at the Richmond County jail.

Officers believe the shooting stemmed from a recent fight between the two men that might have involved a dispute over drug territory.

Lawrence Singleton, of the 1900 block of Murphey Road, was shot at least once at the Bon Air Apartments, 2101 Walton Way, Richmond County Chief Deputy Coroner Mark Bowen said.

Deputies responded to a shooting call at 4:30 p.m. at the apartment complex. They found Singleton dead in the fifth-floor hallway, according to a release. Singleton's body will be taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Augusta Lab today for an autopsy.

This is Richmond County's ninth homicide this year.
