Man in prison for life on murder charge dies

A Burke County man imprisoned for life for murder, sexual assault and robbery died in prison last week.

A Department of Corrections spokeswoman confirmed Friday morning that William Stanley "Bubba" Redd, 48, died at the Augusta State Medical Prison on March 8. Cause of death was not released.

Redd pleaded guilty to the charges lodged against him for the 1987 attack on 23-year-old Rodney Dickey. The victim offered Redd and John Jones a ride home on Sept. 13. Dickey was bound and taken to a pond off Thompson Bridge Road where he was sodomized, weighed down with cinderblocks and thrown into the water.

Jones pleaded guilty to murder, kidnapping and armed robbery. He was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences. Jones is still in prison. The case against Redd, who faced a death penalty trial, dragged on for years until he pleaded guilty in August 1995. He was sentenced to two life sentences plus 20 years.
