Victims lead police to trio in crime spree

Men arrested in killings, robbery, a sexual assault

Three men were arrested Wednesday after a crime spree that began Saturday and involved robberies, assault, kidnapping, shootings and a homicide.

"I think these are obviously dangerous people who were going to continue until they got caught," said Richmond County sheriff's Capt. Scott Peebles. "We're thankful we got them as quickly as we did, but it's unfortunate so many people had to be victimized."

Authorities were alerted of the suspects after a couple was robbed at gunpoint around midnight Tuesday while walking near the intersection of Tubman Home Road and Tudor Drive, Peebles said.

Two hours later, another couple was robbed while walking in the 800 block of Fenwick Street.

In the second robbery, the woman was abducted and sexually assaulted, then dropped off an hour later in the 1000 block of Greene Street.

All victims described the suspects' vehicle as a tan Nissan.

After police received a tip, the men were found Wednesday morning at a residence on G Court.

Hector Dejesus Torres, 17, of Shady Grove in Martinez; Hamlet Hasan Perdomo, 22, of G Court; and Michael Taylor Rewis, 19, of Hoods Chapel Road in Blythe, were later linked to the Saturday slaying of Carl Bush Sr. and a separate shooting incident, police said.

"They were not developed as suspects in the murder until we took them into custody and put some things together," Peebles said.

Authorities found Bush, 56, shot to death in a parking lot of the old train depot in the 500 block of Reynolds Street. Peebles said he had been shot several times in the torso.

Statements were obtained from at least one suspect about Bush's death, Peebles said.

It was the 25th homicide in Augusta this year. So far, there have been 26 homicides, with the body of the 26th victim, Corey Garnett, being found later Saturday evening.

The men are also suspected in the shooting Saturday of Melvin Lamar Williams, 38, in the 500 block of Second Street. Williams told officers he was shot once in the knee after being called over to the suspects' vehicle about 3 a.m.

Peebles said there appears to be no connection between suspects and victims. Authorities said they think robbery was the motive in all the cases.

Charges include murder, rape, aggravated sodomy, kidnapping, aggravated assault, three counts of armed robbery, and four counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
