Metro job total, jobless rate level in September

The number of jobs in the Augusta metro area remained virtually unchanged in September as Georgia's unemployment rate remained locked at 10 percent.

The metro area reported 100 fewer private sector jobs in September compared with August, a decline of 0.1 percent, according to data released Thursday by the Georgia Department of Labor. Total government jobs remained the same.

"Our state's job market remains weak and employers have not resumed hiring at a pace necessary for recovery," said state Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond in a news release.

"Employers are hesitant to commit to the financial risks associated with hiring and training new employees in an uncertain economy," Thurmond said.

Sectors that lost jobs for the month in the Augusta metro area were manufacturing, service-providing, retail trade, financial activities, educational and health services, leisure and hospitality and trade transportation and utilities, according to the data.

Sectors that gained jobs were mining, logging and construction, wholesale trade, and professional and business services.

The number of jobs available in September did increase 1.3 percent from a year earlier for a net gain of 2,700 jobs.

Initial jobless claims did decrease between August and September, and from the previous year.

The Augusta metro area reported 1,796 initial unemployment insurance claims in September, which was about a 23 percent decrease both from August and the same month of the previous year.

The state's unemployment rate remained unchanged from September, though it saw a nearly 19 percent drop in initial unemployment claims between August and September.

But long-term joblessness continues to plague the state. People who have been unemployed for at least 27 weeks -- referred to as the long-term unemployed -- numbered 50.7 percent of the 466,234 jobless workers in Georgia for the month.
