You might have thought it was the second coming of The Beatles.

Women, some young and some not-so-young, crowded at the bottom of the Fort Discovery escalator waiting for a glimpse.

When Jim Belushi stepped on, looking Masters casual in his blazer, jeans, loafers and green pullover, several of his fans practically swooned.

"He's soooo cute," one woman whispered to her friend as they followed the star of television, music and movies to the gallery, where he signed autographs, joked with the crowd and posed for photos.

Thursday's 2003 Masters Gala to raise money for the National Science Center and Fort Discovery was a mix of celebrity-watching, lavish buffet and top-shelf cocktails - followed by a concert at Bell Auditorium with Mr. Belushi and the Sacred Hearts.

"This is the complete package," said Joe Edwards, the chairman of the center and science museum.

The annual event is always held Thursday or Friday night of Masters Week to draw in visitors and local residents.

"Folks that are in town are looking for things to do," Mr. Edwards said.

Thom Tuckey, the military affairs adviser for the Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce, and his wife, Kathy, were attending their second gala.

"This is important," Mr. Tuckey said of the fund-raiser. "The science center is important.

"It's an Augusta treasure, but it's also a Georgia treasure."
