Golf stories abound during April

Spring is a great time for golf fans.

In addition to the Masters Tournament, several golf-related books usually become available this time of year.

Somewhere in Ireland a Village is Missing an IdiotSPECIAL
Here is a sampling of titles that have been released recently:

The Wit & Wisdom of Bobby Jones, a compilation of quotes by the man who helped found Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters, contains lots of advice from one of the game's greats.

Edited by Sid Matthew, one of the leading experts on Jones, the book is broken down into categories: instruction, psychology, philosophy, humor and reflections on golf.

Some of Jones' gems are: "No putt is short enough to be despised" and "Golf is a game of psychology. It is played in the six-inch course between the ears."

David Feherty, an on-course announcer for CBS who is calling the action at the 15th hole at the Masters this week, also has a new book.

Somewhere in Ireland a Village is Missing an Idiot is a compilation of his best columns that appear each month in Golf Magazine, along with some of his other work. It is Feherty at his best, poking fun at the establishment and mostly at himself. Don't ever let it be said that pro golfers - Feherty played for Europe in the 1991 Ryder Cup - are all uptight and hard to approach.

Some of Feherty's best material (suitable for print in a newspaper, that is) was on the 2002 Masters. Feherty has long held that Tiger Woods is on a level all his own, and mocked those who chided the parade of stars that fell to Woods last year.

Somewhere in Ireland a Village is Missing an IdiotSPECIAL
"For the record, today's second-tier players - which is to say everyone except Tiger - do not suck. There is no suckage in the pack of players who follow Tiger in what is a completely suck-free zone," Feherty wrote. "What we have here is a case of blanket denial. Yes, I know that no one is meant to be that much better than the rest, but Tiger is, and his seventy-one on Masters Sunday was the best round of golf I have ever seen him play."

Scratch, which is described as The Hustler meets Tin Cup, is the latest in the Eddie Caminetti series of novels by Troon McAllister.

The book pokes fun at the lucrative golf equipment industry, specifically the golf ball wars.

Caminetti's travels eventually put him at Augusta National, where he tees it up in a match. Other significant parts of the book take place in Augusta, too.

If you enjoy a wager on the golf course, or elsewhere, than Scratch is for you.
