Lynx's goal is adding to lead

Playoff hockey will continue tonight as the Augusta Lynx play host to the South Carolina Stingrays at James Brown Arena in Game 2 of the ECHL Kelly Cup quarterfinals.

Control of the best-of-five series went to the Lynx after they beat South Carolina 5-2 on Thursday night for a 1-0 lead.

The seventh-seeded Lynx entered the postseason as underdogs against the second-seeded Stingrays, but they dominated the series opener. It was the Lynx's first win in the ECHL playoffs since 2001.

"I thought our players competed from start to finish," Lynx head coach Bob Ferguson said. "We won with our special teams."

The Lynx shut out South Carolina on four power play attempts and picked up a power play goal of their own. Another score came two seconds out of a Lynx man-advantage.

While the Augusta's offense took care of the scoring, Lynx goaltender Bobby Goepfert turned in a strong performance on the defensive end with 28 saves. The Stingrays, who entered the playoffs on a seven-game winning streak, were held to two goals for the first time since March 16.

The series will head to Charleston, S.C., for the third game Monday. Games 4 and 5 also would be in Charleston.

"I think the pressure was on us to make sure we win here," Ferguson said. "Now maybe the pressure goes back to them."

Ferguson said the Stingrays had to give up the first two home games of the series because their home arena was already booked.
