Zaxby's buys former Martinez KFC

Augusta area Zaxby's restaurant owners George and Rosemary Duehring are expanding.

A property that previously housed a KFC restaurant at 3969 Columbia Road was purchased by the Duehrings for $525,000.

This will be the Duehrings' seventh Zaxby's restaurant in the CSRA, with six more in the area that are owned by the Zaxby's corporation.

George Duehring said the building will be renovated in the standard Zaxby's style, and should be open for business sometime in the fall.

The property is one block from the Duehrings' first Zaxby's restaurant, he said, which is now Gary's Hamburgers on Washington Road.

"There's a lot of thought that goes into this step," he said. "We're glad to be back in our old neighborhood."
