Jeff Bumgardner and Kellan Monroe, members of First Baptist Church of North Augusta’s worship ministry staff, find out Tuesday if they are winners. The two musicians were nominated in early September for the awards given by the Gospel Music Association for the year’s best Gospel and Christian music.
Bumgardner, First Baptist’s worship pastor, was nominated for Musical of the Year for Christ the Redeemer, a 23-minute play written for Easter Sunday services. The musical was co-written with popular Christian songwriter Joel Lindsey.
Bumgardner said they were inspired to write the musical because it was difficult to find something similar for Easter Sunday that left enough time in the church service for preaching and congregational worship.
“It’s become more and more difficult to teach the Easter story in fresh ways,” said Bumgardner. This is his first Dove nomination.
Monroe, First Baptist’s worship ministry associate, earned two nominations in 2012. This year, he is nominated for Inspirational Song of the Year for When Love Whispers Your Name, a song recorded by the Christian band Beyond the Ashes.
Monroe was a member of the band for three years before leaving in May to join First Baptist’s staff.
“Our motives aren’t for awards. Our motives are purely because we feel like this is what God has gifted us with and what God has called us to do,” he said.
Monroe and Bumgardner will travel to Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn., for the awards presentation.
The Dove Awards will be broadcast on the UP television network at 8 p.m. Oct. 21. The program’s pre-show, where Bumgardner’s and Monroe’s categories will be presented, will be streamed live at 3 p.m. Tuesday on www.hearitfirst.com.
