Love is the answer

“The day will come,” wrote French priest, philosopher, scientist Pierre Tielhard de Chardin, “when, after harnessing space, the winds, the tides and gravitation, we shall harness for God the energies of love.

And on that day, for the second time in the history of the world, we shall have discovered fire!”

You might have heard the remarkable true story of a large group of young boys who grew up in most unfavorable circumstances in the slums of Baltimore. On a special assignment, students of a college sociology class visited with each of them to learn as much as they could about their future outlook.

After the interviews, the students viewed the boys’ prospects for success in life as very dim.

A quarter of century later, another professor came across the report of the study and decided to follow up on as many of those boys as possible. He sent a group of his students into the same area in search of the boys to find out how their lives had gone. A surprising number of the boys, now grown, were located.

Even more surprising was the discovery that most of them had succeeded in life far beyond what the earlier students had predicted.

How could one account for their unexpected success? The professor was intrigued. He had to know.

So, the boys were asked to what they themselves attributed their successes. Almost all of them, either directly or indirectly, told of a wonderful teacher who had touched their lives.

A search was launched to find that teacher. Amazingly, she, too, was soon located.

When asked how she could account for the favorable influence she had on all those boys she said simply, “I just loved them!”

Evidently she loved them so effectively that each of them felt valued and cherished to such an extent that they believed in themselves and found the inspiration and ambition that led to their achievement.

This brings to mind the memorable words of Mother Teresa: “Spread love everywhere you go: first of all in you own house.

Give love to your children, to your wife or husband, to a next door neighbor. Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier.

Be the living expression of God’s kindness – kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile, kindness in your warm greeting!”

I pray this blessing for you as for myself!
