Kids (and adults, if we’re honest) love to hunt for eggs. The best part of the egg hunt is the end when you gather your loot, sit down somewhere and begin to pop them open to discover the surprise inside each one. Who doesn’t love a surprise?
That very first Easter morning held within it a surprise as well. In Matthew’s Gospel, three women are traveling to the tomb where Jesus’ body lay after he was crucified. They were going to anoint his body with oils and spices, as was the custom for the first few days following death.
They had likely done this the previous two days, and now on the third day they are going again to perform this ritual. But this time when they arrive at the tomb, the stone has been rolled away, and when they go inside an angel reveals to them that Jesus is no longer in the tomb, but has risen from the dead and is alive.
This wasn’t what they expected. It was a surprise. It was the kind of surprise that would forever alter their lives and all of history.
As we celebrate Easter weekend with egg hunts, family gatherings and church services, let’s anticipate a surprise. God is all about showing up and surprising people. He did it that first Easter morning, and he still does it today. This weekend, may we all experience the Easter surprise that is Jesus.
