Christians walk 'way of the cross' on Good Friday

Bring your crosses, your crucifixes and your walking shoes.

That’s the invitation of the Good Friday Way of the Cross, an annual cross walk local Christians take in remembrance of Jesus’ walk to Calvary.

It begins Friday at Burns Memorial United Methodist Church and continues to Ascension Lutheran and Hillcrest Baptist before concluding at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

“There’s something interesting about what they’ve called the Good Friday Cross Walk,” said the Rev. Michael Freed, the pastor of Ascension Lutheran Church. “It’s a big ecumenical event with all kinds of people walking.”

The event is co-sponsored by the South Augusta Pastors’ Alliance, the Alleluia Community and 10 local churches.

Everyone is welcome, Freed said.

“We encourage people to bring crosses or crucifixes,” he said. “It doesn’t matter what size.”

Transportation will be provided for those who are unable to make the 1½-mile walk, which goes on rain or shine.

Each stop at a local church includes access to facilities for anyone needing restrooms or water. At the end, participants have a chance to conclude with an optional stations of the cross.

Along the way, they’ll hear the Passion Week story.

“It’s a progressive reading that works from the time of Jesus’ arrest to his trial before Pontius Pilate, from there up to the actual scourging, carrying his cross, to being crucified,” Freed said.

The mood is reflective and somber, but not distraught. After all, Freed said, Easter is coming.

“It’s quiet. There’s a thankful humility regarding the profound need that God has met for us,” he said. “It builds to what everyone looks forward to, which is the Good News that Jesus is risen.”
