THE CHURCH: Spirit Creek was organized in July 1800 near Spirit Creek by slaves on the Twiggs plantation. The Rev. J.W. Sutton was the first pastor. Today, the church is led by the Rev. Glasper Nero Jr.
THE EVENTS: Spirit Creek marks its anniversary with these events:
• Old-fashioned picnic on the grounds, 9 a.m. June 30, at the old church facility, 1783 Dixon Airline Road.
• A live stage re-enactment of the history of Spirit Creek, 5 p.m. July 7, at the new church, 1782 Dixon Airline Road
• Anniversary celebration, 2 p.m. July 15, at the new church. The event includes Historic Springfield Baptist Church as guests.
