Oktoberfest event

A community Oktoberfest celebration is 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, 3321 Wheeler Road.

Pick’n and Praise’n

The final Pick’n and Praise’n of the year will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Glenn Hills Baptist Church, 2877 Lumpkin Road.

One Heart performs

One Heart, a musical trio from Florida, will perform in concert at First Assembly of God in Lincolnton at 6 p.m. Sunday. An offering will be taken and a nursery will be available.

Bishop installation

The Rev. Gregory John Hartmayer will be ordained as the 14th Catholic Bishop of Savannah at 2 p.m. Tues­day in the Cathedral of John the Baptist in Savannah.

As Bishop of Savannah, Hartmayer will oversee the Diocese of Savannah, which includes the 90 counties of South Georgia, including Richmond and Columbia counties.

Bishop-elect Hartmayer is a Franciscan priest who most recently served as pastor of St. John Vianney Parish in Lithia Springs.

Poetry contest

Middle school and high school students are invited to submit poems on the topic of liberty to a poetry contest sponsored by The Augusta Jewish Community Center and the Augusta Jewish Federation.

The poetry contest is part of a special program and exhibit, titled Emma Lazarus: Voice of Liberty, Voice of Conscience, at the Augusta Jewish Community Center from Jan. 7-21.

Poems should be inspired by the work of Emma Lazarus, the Jewish poet who wrote The New Colossus, the sonnet inscribed at the base of the Statue of Liberty.

Winners will be asked to read their poems at a ceremony at the community center at 2 p.m. Jan. 8.
