Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, begins Wednesday at sunset. It marks the beginning of the Jewish High Holy Days, a 10-day period that ends with Yom Kippur.
Yom Kippur begins at sundown Sept. 17 and is remembered as a day of atonement, with fasting and prayers.
Rosh Hashana is celebrated with dinners, prayers for the year ahead, and the blowing of the shofar. Some also practice the ritual of Tashlich, in which members throw pieces of bread into bodies of water to represent the casting off of sins.
