When Scott and Carina Robertson saw the rolling, wooded landscape and magnificent view at The Ridge at Chukker Creek in Aiken, they knew they’d found their new home.

The Robertsons were living in Ellenville, N.Y., and Scott’s job was being transferred to the South. After a four-day house-hunting trip in the Augusta-Aiken area, they stumbled upon The Ridge at Chukker Creek as they were taking a break from their search.

They started asking local people about schools in the area because they have a young daughter, and Chukker Creek Elementary School was highly recommended. Nearby, they saw The Ridge at Chukker Creek and ran into the developer, who took them on a tour and let them pick their lot. After seeing some of the builder’s work in Grovetown, they were sold, Scott said.

They moved into their home in April, becoming the first family to occupy The Ridge at Chukker Creek.

“There’s a lot of trees. It’s not completely flat, which is what I really love,” Carina said.

Among their favorite features of the subdivision, Scott loves the 5-acre, spring-fed pond equipped with a boat dock where he and his daughter, Cara, go fishing.

In addition, the subdivision has a community garden, horse stables and 7 miles of walking and horse trails.

The developer has set aside 100 acres for greenspace, which supports all types of wildlife. On any given day, Scott said that he sees whitetail deer, wild turkeys, woodpeckers, bluebirds, hummingbirds, quail and doves on their half-acre lot.

“Every night, we have a big family of rabbits. It’s very nice. There’s no streetlights yet, so you can see (stars) for miles,” Scott said.

The family was also attracted to Aiken’s rich history and its proximity to other major cities, such as Savannah, Charleston, S.C., Atlanta, Charlotte, N.C. and Nashville, Tenn., where Scott is from. In addition, Aiken has a lot to offer with new restaurants and businesses coming to the area.

When the family moved to Aiken, Carina had the opportunity to build her dream home, which has five bedrooms and four baths.

“There’s several bedrooms upstairs that have tray ceilings and cathedral ceilings. My bathroom has double sinks and a jacuzzi tub. Huge, walk-in closets throughout the house,” Carina said. “There are columns and archways, coffered ceilings in the dining room. Our master has a sitting area, so it has two tray ceilings.”

Carina also designed her home to have two staircases and the laundry room on the top floor. In addition, it has hardwood floors and oil-rubbed, bronze fixtures throughout the house.

Chukker Creek has 25 homes that are either under construction or have families living in them. Residents range from young couples to retirees, Scott said.

“It’s a very nice mixture. A lot of school-age kids. A lot of playmates. The families walk together. Everybody’s very friendly,” Scott said.

When the clubhouse is completed, Carina expects that residents will gather for dinners, holiday parties and special events. The Robertsons plan to live in Aiken until their daughter graduates from high school.

“It’s very peaceful. It’s very happy here,” Scott said.
