Garden Gnome: Lovely daylilies to star in show

  • Follow Gardening

Daylilies are the flower of summer. From the most exotic to the tough-as-nails orange flowers along the roadside, daylilies are captivating while they last.

Though their beauty is fleeting, daylilies are worth cultivating for the splendor they add to the landscape. SANDY HODSON/STAFF

Though their beauty is fleeting, daylilies are worth cultivating for the splendor they add to the landscape.

The only tiny criticism is that the blooms are true to their name, as in each bloom lasts only one day. But, before dropping them from the list of must-have, consider the profusion of blooms many varieties offer and the ones that rebloom.

There’s a perfect opportunity this weekend to learn more and pick up some additions for your flower beds. Saturday, from 1 to 4:30 p.m., the Daylily Society of Greater Augusta will have its annual flower show.

See the best in flowers, design and photography at the H2U Building at Doctors Hospital, 1305 Interstate Parkway.

And Sunday, several gardens will be open for visits. All of the events are free, so no excuses.

Sunday open gardens:

1 to 4 p.m. – Archway Gardens, 178 Springlakes Court, Martinez

9 a.m. to 4 p.m. – Shaw’s Sunshine Garden, 3096 Lumpkin Park Drive

9 a.m. to 4 p.m. – Jane Waldrop’s Garden, 618 Clinton Way West, Martinez
