John and Dawn Steiner weighed a couple of factors when choosing to purchase a lot in North Augusta’s Hammond’s Ferry neighborhood eight years ago.

The couple wanted their new subdivision to have an “urban” feel but more important, they needed it to be handicap accessible for Dawn, who has multiple sclerosis and is in a wheelchair.

Dawn was able to design the 3,500-square-foot white-column home that has front porches upstairs and downstairs.

“I like things that are traditional,” said Dawn, who felt having a dining room and study were necessities.

The Steiners moved into the home in 2009 and enjoy the nearby restaurants in the mixed-use development in addition to the close proximity to the Savannah River, where they like to take their dog, Izzy.

“We know all of our neighbors,” John said. “Everybody watches out for everybody.”

The entire four-bedroom upstairs is designated for renting the house out during Master’s Week.

The couple’s master bedroom and bathroom are downstairs. An open kitchen and family room complete the downstairs as does a screened-in back porch and courtyard.
