Garden Gnome: Upcoming events for Augusta area gardeners

  • Follow Gardening

Is there a better time to be a gardener than the spring? Even my flower beds look good, or at least better than usual.

I followed the advice of Ted Stephens, the president of Nurseries Caroliniana, and added aluminum around the hydrangea bushes earlier this year. The blue lace top bushes are stunning.

Stephens is a fascinating speaker and terrific source about plants. If you are looking to learn more, there are some other great opportunities coming up:

Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., the Rose Society meets in the adult building at First Baptist Church on Walton Way Extension. Bobbie Reed will speak on The Old Rose Garden Experience.

On Thursday, the CSRA Hydrangea Society meets at 7 p.m. at the home of Chris and Sandy Randall. Call (803) 649-7748 for directions.

On May 22, Dr. Clint Waltz, a University of Georgia extension specialist, will speak on management of turf grass at the 7:30 a.m. meeting at the ARC Growers Breakfast at the Forest Hills Golf Course, 1500 Comfort Road.

The CSRA Hydrangea Society’s annual conference is June 7 with guest speaker Vince Dooley. Other speakers include Jamie Blackburn, the curator of the woodland gardens at the Atlanta Botanical Garden; Robert McCartney, a co-owner of Woodlanders Nursery; and Lisa Bartlett of Green and Grow of Atlanta. The day includes snacks and lunch.

The cost is $25 for reservations made by June 1 and $30 after that day. Space is limited so get signed up soon at csrahydrangea
society.org.

And June 9, the Basic Horticulture class sponsored by the Augusta Council of Garden Clubs is about new cultivars. Mike Sikes is the speaker and the day includes a tour of the Research Center for Applied Nursery Research. The cost is $25 and reservations must be made at least 10 days before the class. Register at augusta
councilgc.com.

Thank you Sandy. I appreciate all this information and hope you will continue to keep us posted on gardening events. Sorry for mentioning this but is there a typo regarding Sandall Randall's name? Please check on that.

Thank you, Willow. We noticed your comment and have made a couple of calls to check on the information. A few Google searches have her as Sandy, but we will be looking to confirm beyond that.

Willow, you were correct.

Willow, you were correct. Incorrect information from the Richmond County Extension Service website was used, but we have confirmed you were correct. Thanks for saving us from printing it wrong in tomorrow's paper.
