Dear Scott: Who is Hombre? I looked him up on the Internet and I keep getting references to a western movie and Spanish definitions. Is he is the guy with the cowboy hat and the long pony tail that does the celebrities?
Answer: I think you are asking about Jose Eber. I’m pretty sure that Hombre rode off into the sunset. Although Eber is still located in Beverly Hills, I don’t hear much about him anymore. Other celebrity stylists have taken the limelight, for now.
You are also probably hearing about ombre hair color. This popular, not-so-new trend has sparked a recent revival by incorporating bright vibrant color for a more flashy urban feeling.
The ombre is characterized by long hair that is darker in color at the roots and lighter in color at the ends. You may remember the look as worn by Sara Jessica Parker when Sex and the City was on TV. However long ago that was is how long it’s been around. At that time everyone wondered why she always had roots.
I personally liked the look back then and appreciate it even more with the fun new colors.
Dear Scott: I am having problems with my scalp. It is very itchy and red. I have tried dandruff shampoos but they don’t help. It drives me crazy. Can you recommend something?
Answer: See a dermatologist to get a correct diagnosis about this problem. Some people are diagnosed with an allergic reaction to an ingredient called cocamidopropyl that is found in most shampoos. It is a foaming agent. The only way to find out is to stop using it.
Since it is derived from coconuts, organic companies are substituting this ingredient as a replacement for sodium lauryl ether sulphate, Unfortunately, it can cause contact dermatitis.
Most people do not seem to be sensitive. Burt’s Bees offers a shampoo that is an over-the-counter product that is free of this ingredient. It is hard to find in the stores so you might want to order it online.
Low ferritin levels can cause hair loss and an itchy scalp. Ferritin levels affect the amount of iron that is stored in the body and can be measured with a blood test. This should also be taken into consideration.
Take an iron supplement with vitamin C or with a glass of orange juice if you want to increase your iron retention. The ascorbic acid helps the body to absorb the iron. Caffeine and alcohol will inhibit absorption. Also, calcium supplements or dairy products should be avoided for at least four hours before or after taking the iron supplement.
It’s not as hard as it sounds. Just add this regimen to all of the other stuff you need to keep up with.
