Shopgirl: Beat summer heat with Dog Days movie series

The Aiken County Library is hosting its “Dog Days of Summer” movie series, which is exactly what it sounds like: a chance to beat the heat with a series of movie screenings featuring films that have a cute pooch in the starring role.

This series runs through July and August, each Friday at 1 p.m. at the 314 Chesterfield St. branch in downtown Aiken. July 14’s movie is Bolt, July 21’s movie is Hachi, and the series continues with more dogcentric classics. Admission is free and you can get more information by calling (803) 642-2020.

WHAT’S NEW. Did you realize Amazon’s Alexa voice control software now has more than 15,000 skills? You can order pizza from Domino’s, call an Uber, and a host of other actions right from your Amazon Echo, Dot, or even your smartphone through the Alexa app.

About 20 percent of Alexa’s skills revolve around flash briefings, which can come from sources like NPR, Fox Sports, CNN, or even your own custom curation of sources.

To learn everything you need to know about Alexa’s many skills and commands, just go to and select “Echo &Alexa” from within the departments tab and then select “Alexa Skills” to learn the latest and greatest thing Alexa can do for you (and even search within the skills if you have a certain one in mind).

WHAT’S TRENDY. Target is always at the forefront of affordable fashion that doesn’t necessarily unravel after one wash, and they’re coming at you in the coming months with four new lines within the Target family.

A New Day is a women’s fashion line that is designed to mix and match to maximize each piece’s use, and most pieces could be worn to all but the most formal workplace.

Project 62 is a home furnishings line that will remind you of West Elm or Anthropologie’s college-budget sister.

For your activewear needs, Target is also launching JoyLab – a great piece of news since Target has long since been a good place to supplement the Lululemon or Outdoor Voices in your closet with some more affordable pieces that last a good while.

Lastly, Target is bringing Goodfellow &Co. to the men’s section, a brand aimed at providing affordable menswear options within stores.
