CANTON, GA.: David Anderson wrote: “Hyundai refers to the available engine choices in the Sonata as ‘One Powerful Dynamic Duo.’ Rather than going the I-4/V-6 engine choice of everyone else in this class, Hyundai’s engine choice is one of two four-cylinders.
“The base 2.4-liter puts out 198/200 horsepower, depending on the chosen trim level, and the optional 2-liter twin turbo four-cylinder is rated at 274 horsepower – which, according to Hyundai, is more than the Toyota Camry V-6. The Sonata has no V-6 option.
“This is actually a formula being adopted by several manufacturers. Cadillac, for instance, with the ATS offers a very similar arrangement of a base normally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder and an optional twin turbo 2-liter four-cylinder. It does, however, also offer a 3.6-liter V-6.
“The point is, manufacturers are having to meet more stringent Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards, and the way to meet those standards for now is to get more horsepower out of smaller, more fuel efficient engines.
“These more fuel efficient options combine to offset the less fuel efficient performance or luxury offerings, which in Hyundai’s case means the V-8 options available in the premium Genesis and Equus sedans.
“Hyundai has evolved over the past few years to be a well-rounded, full-service car brand with something on the table for almost any taste. Its corporate advertising has also gone upscale (how can you not trust that suave voice-over by Jeff Bridges?).
“I have heard it said that the louder and more obnoxious a commercial is, the less intelligent the perceived target audience is thought to be as a whole. I truly feel that Hyundai has raised its brand awareness and improved both its actual and perceived brand quality and image. Now, if we can just get that message down to the local dealers (in Atlanta, anyway).
