Kmart has already started offering the promotion, and the layaway service fee is free through Nov. 17, according to a Kmart spokeswoman.
Previously, the fee was $5 for an eight-week contract and $10 for a 12-week contract. The free service fee is also available for customers who place items on layaway online at www.kmart.com.
Customers still must make payments on their layaway items every two weeks. Kmart does not require a minimum purchase amount. The store’s layaway program is year-round.
Starting in October, Sears will also waive its layaway service fee, but the dates are still to be determined, according to the Kmart spokeswoman.
Kmart is also having a Big Layaway Giveaway. Each week, one customer per store who has placed items on layaway has a chance to have the remaining balance paid off.
No purchase is necessary. Residents of the United States and Puerto Rico who are 18 and older can enter the drawing. The sweepstakes ends Nov. 17.
For official rules, prize descriptions and other information, visit a participating Kmart store or www.kmart.com/layaway.
