Walmart starts Christmas layaway early

  • Follow Local Business

Now that school is back in session, parents can start concentrating on the next big event in their children’s lives this year: Christmas.

Walmart is bringing back its Christmas layaway program a month earlier this year. Layaway will be available at stores nationwide Sept. 16 through Dec. 14, said Molly Philhours, a spokeswoman for Walmart.

“One of the things that is new this year, you can sign up on Facebook by liking your local Walmart page to get access two days earlier on Sept. 14,” Philhours said.

Walmart is starting its Christmas layaway program early to give “customers an extra month to put items on layaway and stretch their payments out” to make things easier for them this year, she said.

“We’ve also extended the categories that we offer layaway in. Last year, it was just on jewelry, electronics and toys. This year, we’ve expanded the selection to include small home appliances and select sporting goods,” Philhours said.

Eligible sporting goods include basketball goals, trampolines and large exercise equipment, she said.

To place items on layaway, each product must cost at least $15 and the total purchase must be at least $50. Customers must make a down payment of 10 percent or $10, whichever amount is greater.

At customer request, Walmart will charge a $15 layaway opening fee, and if customers make their final layaway payment, they will receive a full refund of the $15 fee on a Walmart gift card. There will be no additional fee if shoppers don’t complete their layaway payments.

Customers will be able to make layaway payments at any store register, except for the final payment.

“We know last year that we had millions of customers use the layaway program. It was because our customers needed it so much and they asked for it to come back, that’s why we brought it back,” Philhours said.
