Amen Corner: Food 2 Fight Hunger

Items gathered for the Food 2 Fight Hunger campaign totaled nearly 6,000 pounds for Richmond County, left, and Columbia county organizations.

WHAT: Local organizations competed to collect the most canned food items and build the tallest food pyramid in the second annual Food 2 Fight Hunger.

THE TEAMS: Richmond County and The Salvation Army of the Greater Augusta Area teamed up against Columbia County and the Evans Lions Club to raise 5,995 pounds of food on a Saturday in July.

THE DONATIONS: Shoppers, spectators and supporters at two area Kroger stores donated the items to build the pyramid. The food collected in Richmond County benefits The Salvation Army’s soup kitchen and food pantry, and the food collected in Columbia County benefits the Columbia County Cares food pantry and New Hope/First Baptist Church Bridge Ministry.

THE TOWERS: The Richmond County tower was tallest, at 22 feet, but Columbia County raised the most food, with a total of 3,842 pounds.
