Celebrated Christian vocalist Jason Crabb brings his solo show to Graniteville for a free concert at 6: 30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, at Christian Heritage Church.
After more than a decade at the front of the Southern Gospel group The Crabb Family, Jason Crabb made his solo debut in 2009 with a self-titled CD that won a Grammy Award for Best Southern, Country or Bluegrass Gospel Album.
In 2012, he was named the Gospel Music Association’s Dove Awards Artist of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year.
Crabb answered questions by e-mail about his most recent album, Love Is Stronger, and new children’s book, One God, One You. Here’s a condensed Q&A with the singer-author.
What can audiences expect at your upcoming show in Graniteville?
“We’re going to have a great time! I love S.C.! There’s a special excitement in the air when we are in S.C.! I feel like I’ve got the best musicians on the road today – Lori, Blaine and Justin – and we’re just gonna let loose and have church! I can’t wait to get there!”
Tell us about your album, Love Is Stronger. What was the inspiration for it?
“Well, I enjoy all styles of music – always have, always will – and this project reflects that perfectly. We’ve got a little something for everyone. The main thought through all the music is LOVE! I want people to know the love of our heavenly Father – that GOD LOVES YOU!”
What’s your favorite song on the album?
“Oh my goodness, that’s a hard question and I think it changes from day to day, ha! One that is especially close to my heart is the song Love Is Stronger, the title of the project. When I first heard that song, my wife was suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, and I watched her struggle – because of her love for our family – to do ordinary, daily tasks. I had to brush both our daughters’ hair for school in the mornings because she was in so much pain trying to do it. You know it’s bad when Daddy’s gotta brush the hair! But, I watched her push through the pain to do things for her family of her strong love for our family.
“It also speaks to so many people. Love is stronger than anything! We just filmed a video directed by Roman White, who has directed videos for Carrie Underwood, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift and so many more! We had a special guest actress, a young woman who has Down syndrome named Ashley DeRamus. I met her several years ago and we’ve become great friends and I just knew she was the perfect person to be in this video.
“Roman White (the director) came up with a story line that her father was hurt in a war. So, we asked all my friends on my Facebook page to find us a wounded veteran. We ended up using Jack Morgan and he was perfect! We will be premiering the new video very soon so keep a watch out for that!”
You just wrote a children’s book, One God, One You, about a character you call Jase, a “Crabb on a Mission.” Who is he?
“The name of the character comes from two different places. My grandfather used to call me Jase as a kid and it is also the initials of my immediate family (Jason, daughter Ashleigh, wife Shellye, and daughter Emma) so it’s very special to me. For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to write a children’s book. This has been a dream of mine – to impact the lives of our most precious gift, our children. … This book lets the reader know they are something special and that God created them with a purpose!”
