The Big Local aims for big, local and free community event

As far as the Rev. Randy Monk is concerned, there’s only one thing to do when presented with a large check.

“We ought to give it away,” said Monk, the pastor of Covenant, a United Methodist church in Evans.

When the church received a generous gift, “we started talking about it as a staff,” Monk said. “Everybody loves music. Everybody loves free food.”

And so, The Big Local was born.

The free community event features free music, food and children’s events at Evans Towne Center Park on Sept. 14.

“Everything is local. We’ll be giving away free food and drinks. Hopefully, we’ll have some local artisans out here,” Monk said. “It’s an opportunity to give people a different perception of the church. It’s not all about us. We want to give good things away.”

The Big Local includes live local music from Covenant’s The Omega Band, Adam Sams, Skilyr Hicks, Grizzly Harris and others.

This is the first time Covenant, a 6-year-old church of about 120 people in Evans, has held such an event.

There are no plans for donation buckets, an admission charge or an offering.

“We’ve been blessed beyond compare, not just through monetary giving, but as a church,” Monk said. “We want to give. The ministry of Christ wasn’t self-serving. He gave freely, without obligation. Grace is free. The love of Christ is available to anyone who wants it.”

There’s also no agenda, said Joseph Nordan, Covenant’s worship leader.

“We just want to celebrate our community,” he said, “and we want to have some fun.”
