Microwave Dave show is free for all

Microwave Dave & the Nukes

There's plenty of great music to be experienced in the area over the next few days.

Get your blankets and folding lawn chairs and head for Maude Edenfield Park in North Augusta for a free concert at 7 tonight by the nationally known blues band Microwave Dave & the Nukes.

Microwave Dave and the Nukes is fronted by guitarist Dave Gallaher, who was born in Chicago and reared in Amarillo, Texas.

After his family moved to Atlanta, Gallaher plunged into blues music. He studied journalism at Georgia State College before eventually forming a blues band called The Majestics that toured colleges.

At Atlanta's Royal Peacock blues club, Gallaher and his band backed such legendary artists as Carla Thomas, William Bell, The Tams and Billy Stewart.

He toured for three years with the Nashville-based gospel group the Thrasher Brothers before he helped start Microwave Dave & the Nukes in Huntsville, Ala., in 1989.

Coming from Georgia across the 13th Street bridge, turn right just past the Waffle House onto East Buena Vista. Go a short distance and you'll see on the left the stage behind the tennis courts.

These concerts, presented by the North Augusta Cultural Arts Council, are notorious for starting right on time and ending after an hour. So don't be late.

Jeff Bates, who has one of the best voices in country music, performs at 8 p.m. Friday at the Country Club, 2834 Washington Road. Advance tickets cost $15.

Almost anyone who was in Bell Auditorium in November 2003 for the WKXC-FM Guitar Pull will remember the standing ovation Bates received when he sang Conway Twitty's ballad (It's) Goodbye Time .

He earned another standing ovation performance at a Guitar Pull in 2006 when he sang another Twitty hit, I'd Love to Lay You Down .

Guitarist-vocalist Carl Black will be entertaining for the free Georgia On My Mind Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the Georgia Visitor Center on Interstate 20 at the Savannah River. More than 40 local companies and organizations will be represented at the event.

You just might see me in the Waffle House free pancakes line. Plus you can pick up lots of free travel literature for your Georgia summer vacation.
