After huge initial success last year, a dance fundraiser is returning June 8 to help those with Alzheimer’s disease.
The second annual Dancing Stars of Augusta will be at 6 p.m. June 8 at the Bell Auditorium.
“This was a great first-time event. It raised not only a lot of money but a lot of awareness in the 17 counties we serve,” said Dee Dee Kurilla, of the Alzheimer’s Association Augusta Region.
Last year’s event, based on the popular television show Dancing With the Stars, brought in more than $92,000.
Kurilla expects this year’s event to raise about $150,000.
Unlike the television show, which is spread out over the course of several weeks, the fundraiser is one glittered night of dance, pairing area “celebrities” with skilled dancers, chosen by Emilie Tobias, of the Ballroom Dance Center in Evans.
Kurilla said the participants have been rehearsing their numbers for several weeks and should put on quite a performance.
The couples perform and are judged by a three-person panel – Ron Jones, of the Columbia County Ballet; Megan Luquire, of Augusta West; and Anthony Robinson, of Augusta State University.
Audience members will also vote on their favorite performers for $1 per vote.
In addition to the 10 couples, there will be performances from the Columbia County Ballet and CSRA Shag Club and a special hip-hop performance in the middle of the show.
Kurilla said the floor seats at the Bell Auditorium sold out in April so additional seats in the balcony have been made available for $25 each.
