Getaway: Freedom Weekend

Hot-air balloons will fill the skies of Simpsonville, S.C., this weekend for Freedom Weekend Aloft.

The sky over Simpsonville in upstate South Carolina will be filled with brightly covered hot-air balloons this weekend for Freedom Weekend Aloft.


Weather permitting, the balloons will fly Friday night and then each morning and evening through Monday.

Balloon rides are available for $175 per person. You can also ascend in a tethered balloon for $10, or $5 each for ages 12 and younger.

Entertainment options are plentiful for the earthbound.

Amusement rides will run each day, and there will be arts and crafts, with vendors selling items including handmade jewelry, decorative bags, photography and artwork.

Healthy foods, such as salads and wraps, will be for sale, along with the more traditional festival fare of hamburgers and hot dogs.

More than a dozen bands will provide a musical backdrop. Luke Bryan, Joey and Rory, and Blues Traveler are scheduled to perform. The Four Star Navy Rock Band and U.S. Navy Fleet Forces band will perform on Memorial Day.

Jugglers, magicians and comedians will entertain in the Family Fun Zone, which will also feature Wii games and a Ripley's Aquarium exhibit.

A U.S. Disc Dog competition will be held from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

COST: $10 per person at the gates, free ages 12 and younger

GETTING THERE: Take U.S. Highway 25 to Trenton, then South Carolina Highway 121 north to Saluda. Take state Highway 39 to Laurens. Turn left on state Highway 14 west for about 13 miles, then take Interstate 385 north for about eight miles to County Road 55. Exit and turn right onto County Road 55 to Simpsonville.
