Symphony Orchestra Augusta is one of our area’s treasures, and coming up soon is a chance to hear them perform under the stars (and for free). The Pops! Under The Stars event will be May 10, featuring fireworks and food trucks and a chance to support local fine arts. If you would rather not sit on a picnic blanket, get a table for six or eight and help support SOA education and community engagement. The tables include wine, snacks and VIP parking. Go to soaugusta.org for more information and pricing. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m., and it’s such a great time to bring kids and introduce them to the beauty of symphonic music.
You’ve probably noticed that Birkenstock sandals are back in vogue, from street style to runway. Zara is selling a rhinestone-studded version, Givenchy is pushing a floral reinvention, Sacai Tatami has a platform model, and the original Arizona model of Birkenstock was tweaked a little for a “re-release” this March.
I think people love these sandals for a few reasons. First of all, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more comfortable shoe. They’re literally the best. Second, they have that low-key tomboy charm that makes juxtaposing fur or sequins all the more fun and rebellious. When you put aside the cultural association Birkenstocks have for most of us with anti-fashion (dare I say normcore?) or hippie looks, it becomes a basic sandal that I think you’ll wear to death this summer.
Waterlogue is a fun app I’ve been playing around with. It takes your photos and converts them into very realistic watercolor images, with more than 10 variations on vibrancy, definition and tint. The resulting images are high-resolution enough to print and frame.
With a matte finish, they look convincingly enough like you painted a quick watercolor instead of taking an iPhone picture of that mountain vista on your last vacation. You can find Waterlogue in the App Store for $2.99, and I’ve found it to be worth it.
The app hasn’t glitched or crashed yet, and unlike most photo editing apps, it does not seem to eat up the phone’s battery, either.
