Valentine's Day is time for courtin'

Cher Best is happy to be "so square".

W hat is the most romantic thing you've ever done on Valentine's Day? After all, Valentine's Day is supposed to be about romance, isn't it? How did we come up with a day to celebrate love? Actually, Valentine's Day's real name is Saint Valentine's Day.

According to Wikipedia, Saint Valentine's Day is named after an early Roman Christian martyr. The day first became associated with romantic love around the 14th century, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.

Back then, women used the legal system to resolve matters of the heart. It was called courtly love or high court. It was established in Paris on Feb. 14 in the 1400s. The court dealt with things such as love contracts, betrayals, and violence against women. Women selected the judges on the basis of whoever had the best and most touching poetry reading.

Hmm, is there any wonder that back in the day romancing someone was called courting and that poetry is still a big part of romance in the form of greeting cards?

Back then, it seemed men had to be more creative. Instead of buying flowers, they actually picked them. Instead of buying a greeting card, they actually wrote poetry. Instead of playing a romantic CD, they actually sang for a woman's affection and instead of buying dinner, they actually caught, killed and cooked it.

While I'm not too keen on a man catching and killing my dinner, I think I might like to see him in the kitchen cooking it. There is just something very special about someone who takes the time to do something different and special for you.

Valentine's Day is a day not just for lovers but it's also a wonderful opportunity to just show someone you care.

I am no Valentine expert, but allow me to make some friendly suggestions.

Husbands and boyfriends, be forewarned: If she says she doesn't want anything for Valentine's Day, get her something anyway. Chances are, you'll be a lot happier on Feb. 15.

Wives and girlfriends: If he says he doesn't want to celebrate Valentine's Day, make sure he knows you plan to celebrate it.

To all those persons in love -- or even in like -- with someone special: Might I suggest that for Valentine's Day 2011, you try something a little different? My Mom has told me many times, that the best thing to give someone special is something you would want yourself.

That being said, I am positive my boyfriend will love the new Coach purse that I bought him. I am certain that he will know how special he is. If, by chance, I am wrong and he doesn't like it, oh well, I guess I'll just have to keep it for myself.
